How the numbers and evidence are built

The whole index is designed to be recomputable. Here are the exact formulas, factor tables, and evidence labels used before a row reaches a board.

Formulas and factor weights are universal — shown here in their canonical notation.

The Countly Passport Score

CPS(p) = 100 · Σ_d [ w(d) · a(p,d) · s(p,d) ] / Σ_d [ w(d) ]   for all destinations d ≠ p
a — Access

What it takes to cross the border

What a door is worth

A door to Japan is not a door to a microstate. Every destination is weighted by a public formula and floored so each country still counts.

w(d) = 0.4 + 0.3·norm(log GDP)
     + 0.3·norm(log arrivals)
w ∈ [0.4, 1.0]
Sub-indices

Diagnostic lenses (0–100)

Access = Σ w·a / Σ w · Stay = Σ w·s / Σ w over open doors · Reach = share of world (GDP+arrivals) behind doors with a ≥ 0.8.

Tier 1 ≥ 77 · Tier 2 ≥ 65
Tier 3 ≥ 50 · Tier 4 ≥ 35
Tier 5 < 35

Residency research status

Residency scores and ranks are displayed as editorial estimates from the published dataset. Primary-source field review is ongoing; reviewed corrections override legacy values. Verify official rules before relying on them.

Temporary status: 35% × Travel + 25% × Presence + 20% × Path + 10% × Rights + 10% × Stability
Permanent status: 30% × Travel + 30% × Security + 25% × Path + 15% × Rights

How evidence is classified

Rows are marked confirmed when two independent datasets corroborate them or when the source host is explicitly approved for that destination. A clickable URL alone never grants official status. Other rows remain visible as needs verification.

PathCellsMeaning
dual32,954corroborated by two independent source datasets
clickable provenance5,733rows for which the UI retains a clickable source URL; this is not a claim that every row has one
needs verification6,403visible with a verification label rather than counted as confirmed

Spearman ρ = 0.9951 vs a doors-count mobility rank — a refinement, not a contrarian gimmick.

Honest caveats

Not advice

Not legal advice. Rules change; verify with the embassy before you fly. Corrections: hello@endlessriver.xyz

Freshness

The matrix is re-checked monthly; residence facts use a rolling annual cycle plus event-driven checks. Check dates are shown where retained with the row.

≤ 31 days between checks
Edge cases

Rows without corroboration or a retained official provenance URL stay visible as needs verification and are not presented as confirmed.

Countly · the day-counting app

Your days are the other half of the story.

Countly counts the days you spend in each country — the 183-day rule, Schengen 90/180, and the presence rules that keep a residence permit alive.
